A field. Beautiful. The sun just rising over the horizon. Men. Watching it rise from two sides of a hill. Peacefull, calm, serene. The sun starts to beat its heat down on to the men. They lose all sense of serenity.
"Bang!" Gunfire ricochets off the ground into the air above. As men duck for cover and run screaming into the bushes. Trees catching fire. Bodies of men blown sky high. A man screaming for his wife as he dies. A tank appears. And then another. Both sides cheer for their reinforcements. Both tanks coming from opposite sides of the hill. Bullets pockmark the fields once again. Taking me back to another field. Where Poppies grow, row on row.
This field and is barren now and all the men are gone. Motionless figures in the dust. And here comes one to lift their burden and carry the torch to the next generation. He looks right and left and then walks to the tank. A glimmer takes his attention from the man slumped on the dark ground with his guts pouring out. He looks in the tank and finds some writing. Vergissmeinicht. Forget me not.
A faint promise from heart is then heard by the spirits. And the man leaves the field never to return. But on dark evenings when the shadow of night starts its death grip, he remembers. Vergissmeinicht. Forget me not.
