Tuesday, April 18, 2006As water from melted snow falls down from the roof with its chilling pitt… patt… pitt… patt… . You feel the bond that your family has is breaking. Your Mom and Dad are already deciding how they are going to spend their holiday away from you and your sister. You look outside. Snow falling down makes your teeth chatter. Your mom and dad packing up to leave brings heartache to your throat. You try to drink from the warm mug of hot cocoa, but the lump in your throat disproves it. Instead it burns your mouth. Your sister crawls up next to you to look at the snowflakes. She brings you your favorite, a candy cane. You turn away. The taste of sugar burning your heart more than your mouth. “Natalie,” you say “Why do they have to do this to us?” “I don’t know.” She replies. Knowing that you won’t talk anymore she turns away sucking her candy cane. Throwing it away in disgust she hurries away, stomping into the snow outside as if asking god, “Why? Why do you do this to us?” He does not answer. He never does. Only the soft falling of the snow is heard, and the steady pitt… patt… pitt… patt…. “WHY??” I yell as though he couldn’t have heard otherwise. I hear a loud thump. Surprised I turn around. It is only my Dad’s suitcase thumping into the car. My mom’s suitcase follows his creating an equal thump. They are leaving for the holidays like the year before and before and before! “Why do they have to leave?” but there is no answer only the steady pitt… patt… pitt… patt… of melted snowflakes. |
